The information below is an aggregated knowledge of Google Analytics and Hotjar put together. The test subject is my personal portfolio which is https://www.victors.life

I had 3 iterations of the website, they performed different. Let’s dive.

📱 Devices ratio:

Design portfolios have a different ratio to the general standard. Globally, there are more than 60% traffic comes from mobile. My website has 37% of such. Still decent.

Also, bear in mind that mobile visitors are more likely to share on social than desktop users.

Learning: Captain Obvious say you should design for desktop first but mobile has a huge piece of pie and who knows what the nearest future has for us, so I’d think of mobile/desktop as equally relevant.

👇  Scrolling:

First things first, not everyone will scroll below the fold but the number is big. Almost 90% of visitors scroll below the hero section.

The current page is pretty long and only 28% of visitors reach the footer. I think the number is decent as not everyone will bounce, they can go to some inner page.

🤖  Getting deep:

On average 3 pages will get viewed by a typical visitor. It depends on the complexity of the homepage though.

There are some case study pages that retain users and some that users abandon shortly, although the structure is the page on both. Just keep in mind that equally appealing things can perform completely different.

🧠  Optimization:

Designers work and test on top notch devices, yes. Their website users have older devices on average. Users tend to abandon slow or lagging websites.

There are plenty services that can gage your website basic optimization values for free. Image compression, weight of scripts, etc.

Artefacts

  • I get a lot of traffic from Ashburn, US. Actually, everyone does. It’s Amazon pinging and scanning your website so keep in mind this value when translating your analytics.
  • I get traffic spikes that have weird basis. E.g. a day where I got 500 visits from a device with the resolution of 1024x768. The visits were all the same. Still don’t know how to interpret it.
